New Museum Raises Questions about Authenticity of Indonesian Collector’s Works

Category - news

In 2012, celebrated Indonesian art collector Oei Hong Djien, affectionately known as OHD, opened the third wing of his museum in Magelang, Central Java. Since it opened, there has been allegations that some of the works on display are forgeries of the paintings of Indonesian masters such as Affandi, Hendra Gunawan and S. Sudjojono. An association made up of collectors called the Indonesian Art Lovers Association (PPSI) was even formed to challenge the authenticity of some of the works in OHD’s collection. In 2014, PPSI published a book that highlighted the prevalence of forgeries and to advise fellow collectors against buying forged works. The whole saga has so far remained inconclusive.
