Across the Ocean is a contemporary art exhibition that is also the main component of the 1st Bournemouth Thai Arts Festival. The proximity of this all-encompassing festival to the beach prompts artistic reflections on themes of maritime commerce between Thailand and England dating back to the 15th century. In Across the Ocean, issues of identity and socio-cultural exchange are explored by Thai and international artists as the culmination of aesthetic encounters between these two diverse cultures. While some of the artworks in the exhibition are a means for the artists’ personal expressions, the audience will find that other works address broader political and environmental matters. By featuring compelling video and photography works as well as installations and performances, Across the Ocean draws attention to the shared cultural legacy between two countries both through the accessibility to the exhibition via physical interaction and digital communication.
